Fab Lab, A Creative Space for Innovation.
In 2018, our Fab Lab or Fabrication Laboratory was created and certified by the Fab Foundation. This laboratory is a creative space for innovation for our community. Various everyday objects have been made, such as programmed lamps, life-size tables, virtual reality viewers, puzzles, robots, costume jewelry, simple machines, key chains, models, toys, and even signs. Most of the materials used are MDF, acrylic, plywood, copper plates, plastic (PLA), paper, cardboard, and electronic components.
The Fab Foundation seeks to facilitate and support the growth of the international Fab Labs network. Its mission is to provide access to the tools, knowledge, and financial means to educate, innovate, and invent, using technology and digital manufacturing to create opportunities to improve lives worldwide. This foundation’s global programs focus on education, organizational capacity building and services, and business opportunity.
In March 2020, at the beginning of the COVID19 pandemic in our country, our staff member created frames for face shields in our Fab Lab, supporting the UCR Faculty of Engineering initiative. These frames served as personal protection for doctors who were directly attending the emergency at the national level.
